Blog · Monetize your skills with AI
Businesses abroad are not looking for "a VA who knows AI". They are looking for someone who can fix a specific problem with it. Here is how to become that person.

Filipino freelancers already have a strong reputation abroad: good English, strong work ethic, and years of experience as virtual assistants, marketers and support staff. AI and automation can move that reputation up a level, from someone who does tasks to someone who builds systems that do them. That shift is what lets you charge more and keep clients longer.
I have taught chatbot marketing and automation to Filipino freelancers and entrepreneurs since my early chatbot years, through my course, mentorships and community. This is the path I recommend.
"I do AI automation" is too vague to buy. "I set up Instagram DM automation that books calls for coaches" or "I build lead follow-up systems in GoHighLevel for real estate agents" is clear. Choose one type of client and one problem you can solve well. You can expand later.
Good starting problems for foreign clients include: slow replies to leads, no follow-up after inquiries, manual appointment booking, messy CRMs, and repetitive customer questions.
US and Canadian small businesses commonly use tools like GoHighLevel for CRM and follow-up and ManyChat for Instagram and Messenger automation (affiliate links), plus Zapier or Make to connect apps. Southeast Asian businesses often need WhatsApp automation. AI-first platforms such as ChatbotBuilder AI and PayMeGPT let you build AI chat agents and funnels quickly. Learn one stack deeply before collecting certificates in ten.
Clients abroad buy proof. Build a small demo system for an imaginary business in your niche, record a short video walking through it, and write a one-page case study: the problem, what you built, and what it changes. If you have done real work, measure the result in business terms: replies in minutes instead of hours, more booked calls, fewer missed leads.
Use a clear profile on Upwork, OnlineJobs.ph or similar marketplaces, but do not depend on them alone. A simple personal site with your offer, demo video and case study, and an active profile on LinkedIn, make you look like a business rather than a bidder. I cover more ways to attract clients in How Consultants, Coaches and Freelancers Can Get More Clients With AI.
The best cold outreach shows you looked at their business. Notice something specific, for example that their Instagram comments go unanswered or that their website has no way to book a call, and offer a short idea or a quick video showing how you would fix it. Make it easy to say yes to a small first step.
Avoid competing on the lowest hourly rate. Offer a fixed-price setup for a clearly defined system, then a monthly fee for maintenance, monitoring and improvements. Clients understand paying for a result and for keeping it working.
Document the system, train the client's team, test it on real scenarios before launch, and report results after the first month. Reliability and communication are what turn one project into a long-term client and referrals. If you want a structured method, I use the steps in Don't Automate Chaos: The 8-Step Method I Use Before Building Any AI System.
Yes. Many small businesses abroad need help with chatbots, CRM follow-up and automation and actively hire remote specialists, including from the Philippines.
Chatbot and DM automation, CRM and lead follow-up automation, appointment booking flows, app integrations with Zapier or Make, and AI chat agents trained on business information.
No for most no-code automation work. Coding helps for custom integrations and advanced AI agents, but many paying projects are built with no-code tools.
Use a fixed price for a clearly scoped setup and a monthly fee for maintenance and improvements, instead of competing on the lowest hourly rate.
